“One client called us the Navy Seals of the construction world,” co-founder Ian Hartert told Nashville Interiors Magazine. “If a client would say they were going on vacation for two weeks and they wanted the project finished before they got home, we can plan the whole thing, manufacture all the cabinets, get in there and get it done.”

Hartert-Russell’s reputation for exceptional custom cabinets grew parallel to the city’s incredible growth over the last decade. And soon inspired loyal customers to push Hartert-Russell to take the next step of remodeling and building custom homes.

“A client can hire us to do everything from A-Z,” says Hartert. “There is a lot of comfort in that kind of situation. They have one person to call.”

Founders Ian Hartert and Kevin Russell met as roommates at the University of Wyoming, where they worked construction jobs to earn extra money. After graduation, Hartert returned to his native upstate New York where he joined a fine custom cabinet company. “My boss realized he could use me to help make estimates, handle Excel spreadsheets, and draft cabinets. That’s where I really learned the industry.”

Hartert next moved to Nashville to help his sister, a doctor at Vanderbilt, remodel her library. Her colleagues were so impressed with his work, Hartert soon found himself with a steady stream of clients. “Suddenly, I had another job, then another job,” remembers Hartert. “I got so busy, I told Kevin he had to come down. It was really booming here.”

Hartert-Russell’s success soon paralleled the growth of the greater Nashville community. “Right away we were a unique company,” Hartert remembers. “We were general contractors who had a deep skill set. And we ended up getting some amazing clients.” The duo is now in the third decade of their long partnership which has now blossomed into a company with a 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Nashville that includes a wood shop, in-house millwork and custom finishing, plus a showroom with Nashville Tile and Interiors. Hartert-Russell’s expert work can now be seen from Montana to Maryland and through long-lasting partnerships with fine interior designers such as Southern Modern and architects like Paul John Boulifard and McAlpine House in Nashville and throughout the U.S.
